The contrary canary, the incorrect egret, the un-factual falcon — WRONGBIRD. Every hero has an origin story …and so do we. Once upon a time there was an innocent bird was bitten by a radioactive songwriter, when all of a sudden *CACAWWW* a Wrongbird was born. The world’s premier (and only) WRONG-rock band is helmed by Shinyribs keyboardist Eric Baker and guitarist/producer Michael Blake. Rounding out the group is bassist Dylan Hill of Mamalarky and drummer Tim Smith. This songwriting vehicle most commonly takes the form of a four-piece band, but these characters have been known to add horns, strings, or background singers to their arrangements in addition to wherever else the music takes them…
Baker first released Epitome of the Opposite (2016) under the moniker “Wrongbird Erickson.” This collection of songs was all he brought with him to Austin, TX to try to get his musical brainchild off the ground. Eventually fate led him to meeting Michael Blake, and the next release of music in the form of the EP Who is Wrongbird? (2018) Decidedly dropping the ‘Erickson,’ Wrongbird became a true collaboration. The EP also declared Wrongbird’s intention to be a true part of the Austin music scene and captured the raw energy of their live performances. After a hiatus due to Covid, the bird was back in action with the release of two singles in 2023 Mr. April and Western Hero. In early 2024 they released their most commercial and critically successful wrong-song, Sons of the Desert, a tune that put them on the map far beyond the local Austin scene. Their sophomore LP Don’t Quote Me On That (2024) has definitely changed the creative landscape of the bird forever. Creating a wide swathe of sonic peaks and valleys, this record is the band’s love letter to the art rock greats of the 60’s and 70’s, and maintains the group’s desire for the perfect balance of smirking sincerity.
